NGO Darpan is an online platform of NITI Aayog that creates a repository of information about Voluntary Organisations (VOs) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) across India. It acts as a bridge between NGOs and central government ministries and departments.
On successful registration, every NGO is issued a Unique ID used as primary identification when dealing with government bodies. The Unique ID is widely treated as mandatory for receiving grants, accessing CSR funding and participating in government schemes. The portal improves transparency and helps departments identify and partner with credible NGOs.
Registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (or state Act). Minimum members as per law; charitable/social objectives.
Public charitable trust under the Indian Trusts Act, 1882 (or applicable state law). Registered Trust Deed and trustees.
Non-profit company under the Companies Act, 2013. Certificate of Incorporation and no dividend distribution.
Political organisations, commercial entities and government bodies are not eligible for NGO Darpan registration.
Unique ID is required or strongly preferred for applying for central ministry grants and schemes.
Companies prefer Darpan-registered NGOs for CSR under the Companies Act. DARPAN ID is also used for CSR-1.
Official listing and Unique ID enhance trust among donors, corporates and beneficiaries.
