OVERVIEW

What is a Trademark Certificate?

A Trademark Certificate is the final, legally binding document that confirms your trademark has been successfully registered with the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM). Issued under Section 23 of the Trade Marks Act, 1999, it serves as prima facie evidence of trademark validity under Section 31.

The digital certificate is downloadable from ipindia.gov.in and contains the trademark number, mark image, applicant details, Nice Classification class, and date of registration. Validity is 10 years from the date of application (not from the date of certificate issuance). After receiving the certificate, you can legally use the ® symbol and use the certificate for Amazon Brand Registry, legal proceedings, franchise licensing, customs border protection, and IP-backed financing.

How to Download Trademark Certificate from IP India

The download is free. Follow these steps on the official portal only.

1. Visit ipindia.gov.in

Open the official IP India services portal. This is the only authorised source for valid trademark certificates. Third-party sites cannot issue valid certificates.

From the main menu, select Trade Marks, then Registration Certificate. If you filed through an agent, the agent’s login credentials may provide access.

3. Enter Application or Registration Number

Enter the trademark application number (assigned when Form TM-A was filed) or registration number. The number is in your original filing acknowledgement.

4. Complete CAPTCHA Verification

Solve the CAPTCHA to prevent automated scraping. Refresh if the CAPTCHA is unclear.

5. View and Download the PDF

Click View to display the certificate. Download the digitally signed PDF and save it. It is accepted by courts, banks, Amazon, Flipkart and customs authorities.

Certificate not available? If status shows “Registered” but the PDF is missing, wait 2–4 weeks. CGPDTM generates certificates in batches. If still unavailable after 60 calendar days, contact the Trademark Registry.
CONTENTS

What the Trademark Certificate Contains

01

Trademark Number

Unique registration number assigned to your mark. Used for status checks, renewals, assignments and enforcement.

02

Mark Representation

Word mark text and/or logo image as registered. Confirms the exact form of protection granted.

03

Applicant Details

Name, address and legal status of the registered proprietor. Must match for assignments and Brand Registry.

04

Class & Goods/Services

Nice Classification class number(s) and the description of goods or services covered by the registration.

05

Date of Application & Registration

Validity runs from the application date (10 years). Registration date is when the certificate was issued.

06

Digital Signature / QR

Digitally signed PDF; many certificates include a QR code for verification of authenticity.

VALIDITY & RENEWAL

How Long is the Certificate Valid?

01

10 Years from Application Date

Registration is valid for 10 years from the date of the application (Form TM-A), not from the date the certificate is issued.

02

Renewable Indefinitely

File Form TM-R and pay the renewal fee before expiry. A grace period with surcharge is available. Continuous renewal keeps protection alive forever.

03

Renewal Certificate

After successful renewal, a Renewal Certificate confirms the extended 10-year term. Keep both registration and renewal certificates for your records.

04

Non-Renewal Risk

If not renewed, the mark is removed from the register. Re-filing is required and prior rights may be lost to intervening applications.

KEY BENEFITS

Why the Certificate Matters

01

Legal Right to Use ®

Only a registered mark can lawfully use the ® symbol. Using it without a certificate is a criminal offence under Section 107 of the Trade Marks Act.

02

Amazon Brand Registry

Amazon Brand Registry requires a valid Trademark Registration Certificate (or application in some cases). Certificate unlocks brand protection tools on the platform.

03

Enforcement & Courts

Prima facie evidence under Section 31. Essential for infringement suits, injunctions and damages claims.

04

Customs & Border Protection

Record the registered mark with Customs to help block import of counterfeit goods. Certificate is the key supporting document.

05

Licensing & Franchise

Banks, investors and franchise partners often require the registration certificate as proof of brand ownership.

06

Asset Documentation

The certificate documents an intangible asset that can be assigned, licensed or used in IP-backed financing.
